Czech Republic Overview
Czech Republic is situated in central Europe and has about 10 million people. The number of GPs in our country is about 4000. We can divide GPs in two groups: city GPs and countryside GPs. Usually there is one GP for 2000 thousand patients. GPs take care for people from 19 years old till death. As in many other countries has GP the main position in health care. Function of GP is figure as a gatekeeper.
GPs speciality training takes recently three years. It consists of two parts. The first part, which lasts two years, includes trainee ship in hospital in various branches and in GP office. The second part takes one year in GP and Paediatric medical attendance. During all the training time you have to pass special medical courses (e.g. Palliative care, ECG, Radiology, First aid, Psychotherapy, News from GP, Ethics)
Under the auspices of Ministry of Health there was developed a new financial programme for support of young GPs (in Czech Republic) so called residents. Every year Ministry of Health offers about 150placesfor residents. The essential condition of this programme for residents is the obligation to stay in Czech Republic as a GP for 5 years after the training.
